How the Bundle & Upsell Profit Calculator Works

Bundles and upsells are one of the fastest ways to raise average order value. The question is whether a discounted bundle actually earns you more. The answer depends on your fixed per-order costs: the ad spend that won the customer and the shipping label are paid once, whether the order holds one unit or three.

Enter your single-unit price and cost, your shipping and ad cost per order, the number of units in the bundle, and the discount you plan to offer. The tool prices the bundle, compares its profit with a single-item order, and shows the average order value lift and the change in margin. It also calculates the biggest discount you could offer before the bundle earns less profit than a single item.

Key Formulas Behind This Tool

  • Single Order Profit: Unit Price - Unit COGS - Shipping - Ad Cost per Order
  • Bundle Price: Unit Price x Units x (1 - Discount %)
  • Bundle Order Profit: Bundle Price - (Unit COGS x Units) - Shipping - Ad Cost per Order
  • AOV Lift: Bundle Price - Unit Price
  • Margin Change (points): Bundle Margin % - Single Order Margin %
  • Max Discount Before Profit Drops: ((Units - 1) x (Unit Price - Unit COGS)) / (Units x Unit Price)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why do bundles raise profit per order?

Fixed per-order costs such as the ad cost to win the customer and shipping are spread over more units. Even with a discount on the bundle, you often earn more total profit from one order than from a single-item order.

What does "Max Discount Before Profit Drops" mean?

It is the largest bundle discount at which the bundle still earns at least as much profit as a single-item order. Above that discount, the customer gets a great deal but you earn less per order than you would without the bundle.

Why can the margin percentage fall even when profit rises?

A bundle discount lowers your selling price, so profit as a percentage of revenue can drop even while the dollar profit per order rises. Dollar profit per order is usually the better measure of whether a bundle works.

Does the calculator assume the same shipping cost for a bundle?

Yes. It assumes the bundle ships as one order at the same cost as a single item. If a larger bundle costs more to ship, add the difference to the shipping cost field to see the effect.

What is a good bundle discount?

There is no single number. Many stores offer 10% to 20% off, but the right discount is the one that lifts your average order value while keeping bundle profit above single-item profit. Use the maximum discount result as your ceiling.
