How the Landed Cost Calculator Works

The price on your supplier invoice is only the start. Freight, insurance, import duties, taxes, customs brokerage, and handling all add to what each unit really costs by the time it reaches your warehouse. This calculator adds every one of them together and spreads the total across your units.

Enter your product cost, the number of units, and your shipping and import costs. Choose whether duty is calculated on product value only (FOB) or on product plus freight and insurance (CIF). You get the total landed cost, the landed cost per unit, the amount paid in duties and taxes, and a multiplier showing how much more each unit costs than the invoice price. Add an optional selling price to see your profit per unit.

Key Formulas Behind This Tool

  • Product Total: Product Cost per Unit x Units
  • Dutiable Value: Product Total (FOB) or Product Total + Freight + Insurance (CIF)
  • Import Duty: Dutiable Value x Duty Rate
  • Import VAT / GST: (Dutiable Value + Import Duty) x VAT / GST Rate
  • Total Landed Cost: Product Total + Freight + Insurance + Duty + VAT / GST + Brokerage + Other Handling
  • Landed Cost per Unit: Total Landed Cost / Units
  • Landed Cost Multiplier: Landed Cost per Unit / Product Cost per Unit

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is landed cost?

Landed cost is the total price of getting a product to your warehouse. It includes the product price, freight, insurance, import duties, taxes, customs brokerage, and any handling fees, not just what the supplier invoices you.

Should import duty be calculated on FOB or CIF value?

It depends on the country. Many countries charge duty on the CIF value (product plus freight and insurance), while some, including the United States, base duty on the product value alone. Check your customs authority or broker and choose the matching option in the calculator.

Should I include import VAT or GST in my landed cost?

Only if you cannot reclaim it. VAT-registered businesses in many countries recover import VAT, so for them it is a cash-flow item rather than a cost. If you can reclaim it, enter 0 in the VAT / GST field.

Why does landed cost matter for pricing?

Many sellers price from the supplier invoice and discover later that freight and duties erased their margin. Pricing from landed cost per unit protects your margin before the first order ships.

What does the landed cost multiplier mean?

It shows landed cost per unit divided by the supplier price per unit. A multiplier of 1.35x means every unit costs 35% more than the invoice price once it arrives.
